James Gunn on “Hammering Out” the New DC Universe with Peter Safran

The recent announcement that writer-director James Gunn (Peacemaker) and producer Peter Safran (The Conjuring franchise) had been hired by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to retool and revitalize Warner’s DC Comics-adapted content has many fans excited. Gunn’s relaunched The Suicide Squad was widely embraced by fans and critics alike, and his Peacemaker series is the highest-rated DC Universe property since Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight Trilogy. Teamed with Safran, who knows how to build out a franchise and spin them off into new franchises on a budget, Gunn has he potential to not only become ‘DC’s Kevin Feige,’ but surpass the Marvel Studios guru.

After what he described as “a long, creative weekend,” Gunn acknowledged the many requests to save Legends of Tomorrow from cancellation and for a director’s cut of David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad and promised to “invite all of the DC fandoms” into the new DCU:

As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.

We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.
