Mysterio is a Stand-In for Iron Man in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spoilers…

We still have A LOT of questions about how exactly Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was affected by being *snapped* by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and why seemingly his entire class ended up back in school together in Spider-Man: Far from Home following the time-jump in Avengers: Endgame, but one question that seems to be settled is whether Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, is a villain in the movie, as he is in the comics, or an ally to Spider-Man against the threat of the mysterious elemental entities.

The trailers seem to imply at least a working relationship between the two of them as costumed heroes, but director Jon Watts revealed in a recent interview in EW that the pair actually develop a close friendship, with Beck filling a void in Peter’s life.

If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle.

Of course, cool uncles are often the ones who don’t exactly play by the rules so it’s conceivable that Beck is actually using Parker or attempting to influence him to “turn to the dark side” and use his abilities for his own benefit the way Mysterio does in the comic books. It’s also highly likely that Beck is actually behind the elementals and created them for fame or profit, but we’ll have to wait for the movie to come out to know for sure.

Far from Home was directed by Jon Watts, from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Michael Keaton, Jon FavreauJacob Batalon,ZendayaMarisa Tomei, Cobie SmuldersAngourie Rice, Martin Starr, JB Smoove, and Samuel L. Jackson also star.

The movie opens in theaters on July 5th.
