Somber First Trailer for Avengers: Endgame Introduces Jeremy Renner as Ronin

The first trailer for Avengers 4 is here and, despite its dramatic, almost frantic score, there really isn’t a whole lot going on and the overall feel is pretty somber. We see the predictable fall-out of Thanos’ apocalyptic *snap* at the end of Avengers: Infinity War — or, hear it, as we’re not really shown too much devastation — with Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) lost in space, without power and with very little oxygen left and the remaining heroes coming to grips with their new reality.

The reveal of the movie’s title, teased back in September by co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo and echoed in Stark’s message to Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) that “part of the journey is the end,” is appropriate for what has been called the end of the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe and the beginning of its next 10 years of movies.

Eclipsed by the title’s reveal is the return of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who didn’t suit up as Hawkeye in the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin), but returns in Endgame as a new costumed hero named “Ronin.” In the comic books, Barton was the second hero to take on the mantle of the masterless samurai, an identity that allowed him to be do things that an Avenger can’t or shouldn’t do.

It should really be billed as a “teaser” trailer because it really is just that, a tease of what is to come, interesting at the time, but ultimately unsatisfying. It’s likely that Marvel didn’t want to steal the thunder away from Captain Marvel so soon after that trailer dropped, but we were still hoping for more.

Marvel has not shared an official synopsis or even cast list for Endgame yet. The theatrical debut has been moved up one week to April 26, 2019.
