Intriguing First Teaser Trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX is Full of Surprises

“No one’s ever really gone.”

The title — The Rise of Skywalker — that fades in at the end of the first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated final chapter in the Star Wars saga was not the only surprise in store of fans, as the eerie cackling of none other than Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) can be heard echoing in the darkness. After a long breathy shot of Rey (Daisy Ridley) preparing herself for an attack by, we can only assume, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), we are treated to a series of intriguing images, including our first look at the return of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), some new Stormtroopers and a new droid sidekick for BB-8 named D-0 (“deo”).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was directed by J.J. Abrams, who kicked off the new trilogy as the director of The Force Awakens. This time around, he co-wrote the script for the movie with Chris Terrio. John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall GleesonLupita Nyong’o, Kelly Marie Tran, Billie Lourd and Joonas Suotamo reprise their roles from The Last Jedi, joining series veterans Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Carrie Fisher. Joining the cast are Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20th.

I am excited to see this but I confess to being confused by the title and by the Emperor’s laugh at the end. Does this mean Rey is a Skywalker after all? That hug with Princess Leia and is that the medal from the end of Star Wars? I am glad to see Kylo Ren will be wearing the helmet again. It’s just not a Star Wars movie without a villain in a crazy helmet.

    • I really enjoyed (most of) The Last Jedi so I am hoping that Abrams doesn’t just come in and undo everything. It sure looks like, from the title and from Leia giving Rey what appears to be a Battle of Yavin medal (Luke’s?) that they are back-tracking on Ren telling Rey she is a nobody and making her a Skywalker, but I don’t see the need for it. I liked that Johnson made it clear that anyone could be a Jedi (the broom kid) instead of just this select few.

In the comics and, I think, novels, he inhabits clones, which get burned out quickly when he uses his powers a lot, like to shoot lightning, etc. Not sure how he is back or where he has been, but they explained it in the comics that his essence had a hard time traveling to a new clone body because of the way he was killed.

That was Princess Leia holding the medallion but I don’t think she was giving it to Rey that’s just editing. I just don’t get ending nine movies with ‘Rise’ in the title. Are there going to be more and what happened to Johnson’s trilogy of movies? Also why do I see the laugh coming out of Lando’s bloated face when I close my eyes?

  • Fucking weak ass shit if Rey turns out to be a Skywalker after everything in VIII. You can’t take back everything that happened and say “psych!” Who would she be anyway? Not Luke’s kid. Leia’s so she’s Kylo’s sister? Why not reveal that before now? Not optimistic. Abrams can never finish anything he started why did Disney think he could finish off Star Wars?

I said it before but to me The Last Jedi was really good minus some of LUke’s behavior. I like that Ryan Johnson shook things up and it should be blended into this movie and not overwritten or whatever people think JJ is doing. I can’t think of something he did that I didn’t like. Course I have no idea what the title means but that’s JJ.

Nobydy know who the last Jedi was either and we all talked about that for a year.
