Possible First Look at Namor the Sub-Mariner in Sequel to Black Panther

We are big fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) — Multiverse? MCM?– and its intricately-woven, shared-continuity, episodic-brand of cinematic storytelling. But, after more than a decade, a score of movies, and several in-continuity streaming series, we have yet to see one of Marvel’s first — and, arguably, finest — superheroes make his live-action debut: Namor, the Sub-Mariner! Now, we know — especially after seeing the ridiculous eyeball-with-tentacles monster that some refer to as ‘Gargantos’ and others ‘Shuma-Gorath’ in Doctor Strange 2

The promise of a vast shared universe was so intriguing way back in 2010 that this author even queried Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston about the possible inclusion of Namor and the Invaders in Cap’s first solo movie. In hindsight, it’s clear that Joe had no idea what was being asked of him, whether because of jet lag, comic-con energy overload, or simply lack of deep knowledge of comic book lore.

Dedicated Marvel fans know that there have been hints of whispers of rumors of Namor and Atlantis sprinkled throughout the MCU, and the foul-tempered scion of Atlantis and Marvel’s first mutant is confirmed to appear in Black Panther 2 — possibly as the main antagonist, possibly as the dupe of the main antagonist — but we have yet to see any concept art or costume designs. Until now… maybe. A blurry image has been making the rounds that purports to be Black Panther 2 concept art of Namor wearing a very comic-accurate costume and color scheme, accentuated by gold.

The sequel to Black Panther is being directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole. Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia WrightDanai GuriraMartin FreemanDaniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Dominique Thorne and Angela Bassett star.

Black Panther 2 opens in theaters on November 11th!
