The New Mutants Brings Horror to Superhero Movies

With first Deadpool and then Logan, Fox has greatly improved its aging X-Men franchise by skewing a bit darker, with more adult themes, and the trend seems to be continuing with The New Mutants. Based on the Marvel comic book of the same name, which focuses on a younger, more troubled and inexperienced group of mutant students at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the latest X-Men spinoff seems to be taking superhero action into straight-up horror movie territory.

The New Mutants was directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik; Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball; Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa, aka Sunspot; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, aka Mirage; and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

The movie is slated to open on April 13, 2018.

  • This trailer totally surprised me! Fox finally seems to be on the right track now that they are not taking all of their cues from Singer.
