Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Introduces the Next Generation of Ghost Hunters

“Everything happens for a reason.”

With a suspense-filled tone that could easily be mistaken for a promo for the next season of Netflix’s Stranger Things — and not just because it heavily features Mike, er, Finn Wolfhard — the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife makes clear two things: 1) the franchise is moving away from the goofy, slapstick 2016 Ghostbusters revival, and 2) it is strongly connected to the original movies and characters that we know and love.

Apparently, the original Ghostbusters all but eradicated ghosts so no paranormal activity has been detected in 30 years. Now, the sleeper town of Summerville is about to become ground zero for a spiritual awakening and, fortunately for us, the grandchildren (Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) are on hand to dust off papi’s gear and go out and bust some ghost. Who ya gonna call?

The movie was directed by Jason Reitman, from a script he wrote with Gil Kenan. Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon also star.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens in theaters in Summer 2020.
