IT Director Andres Muschietti Tapped for Attack on Titan and The Time Machine

When you can take a $35 million budget and turn it into a $700 million global phenomena, people stand up and take notice, even if you have only a pair of movies under your belt. Case in point: Andres Muschietti, whose freshman film Mama was a modest horror hit, but whose follow-up film IT broke box office records and became the highest-grossing Stephen King adaptation of all time. Suddenly, “Andy” found himself to be a highly sought-after director.

With success comes opportunities and Muschietti is parlaying his success into a couple of potential new franchises. Just days ago, it was reported that Muschietti had signed on to direct a live-action adaption of Attack on Titan for Warner Bros., a hugely popular Japanese manga (comic book) series that has been adapted into a popular anime series and as a two-part feature adaptation by director Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla).

Now, it has been revealed that Muschietti, along with his producer sister Barbara Muschietti, are developing a new feature adaptation of H.G. Wells‘ The Time Machine, which Andres also plans to direct. This will be the third movie adaptation of Wells’ sci-fi classic after the 1960 George Pal version starring Rod Taylor and the 2002 Simon Wells version starring Guy Pearce. Warner Bros. is producing with Paramount Pictures and Appian Way, but is apparently “steering the picture creatively.”

Next up for Muschietti is IT: Chapter Two, which just wrapped production on (fittingly) October 31st. The sequel is slated for release on September 6, 2019.
