E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial “Sequel” Short is a Holiday Reunion

It would be very easy to be very cynical about finally revisiting the world of Steven Spielberg‘s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial after so many decades and have it simply be one long commercial for Xfinity, but “A Holiday Reunion” is so well done that we are willing to forgive the commercial aspect of the short and love it for what it is: a touching reunion between old friends.

After 37 years, E.T. has returned to Earth to check in on Elliot (Henry Thomas) only to find that he has grown up and now has a family of his own. We get to see some familiar things — E.T. giving new life to a wilting flower and devouring a Reese’s Pieces-topped cupcake — as well as see E.T. adapt to some new experiences, and it’s all set to John Williams‘ original score. Commerical, yes, but it still gave us warm fuzzies, especially when E.T. revealed what is making him lonesome for “hooooome.”
