Kubo Director Travis Knight to Helm Bumblebee Transformers Spinoff
In a very exciting move, Deadline is reporting that Paramount has hired Travis Knight, director of the Oscar-nominated stop-motion hit Kubo And The Two Strings, to helm Bumblebee, the first movie to spin off of the juggernaut Transformers movie franchise. Kubo was Knight’s first movie as a director, though he helped bring to the screen such notable works The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman and Coraline as president and CEO of Laika animation studio. Bumblebee will be his first time directing a live-action movie.
The Bumblebee movie already has a June 2018 release date, but there’s no word on what the plot of the script written by Christina Hodson (Unforgettable) might be or even if the young Autobot will once again transform into a custom-built yellow & black 2016 Chevrolet Camaro (probably a newer model, we’re guessing). Transformers: The Last Knight producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura offered a coy non-answer when questioned about it last year saying, “It’s Bumblebee’s story. I don’t think you’ll see a lot more [Transformers] in it. We’ll see as it evolves.”

The Last Knight is the fifth installment of the live-action adaptation of the popular Hasbro toy line. The movie was once again directed by Michael “Boom” Bay, from a screenplay written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Ken Nolan, based on a script by Akiva Goldsman. Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Tyrese Gibson, Isabella Moner, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel and Sir Anthony Hopkins star.
Transformers: The Last Knight opens June 23, 2017.
