DC Movie Nooz: Aquaman “Cool and Compelling,” Supergirl Movie in the Works and WW: 1984 and Joker Casting Updates
Aquaman
While discussing recent hits and misses and Warner’s upcoming film slate with Variety, Chairman Toby Emmerich praised James Wan‘s Aquaman for its tone and for bringing a world “unlike any” to the big screen:
[James] struck a great balance between fun and jeopardy, edge and wonder, comedy, and tragedy. … James created a totally original underwater universe. Just as [Wonder Woman director] Patty Jenkins did with Themyscira, James’ Atlantis is cool and compelling — unlike any world we’ve seen on film before, in a superhero movie or any other.
Aquaman was written by Will Beall (Gangster Squad), from a story by Wan and Geoff Johns, and stars Jason Momoa stars as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman. It opens in theaters on December 21st.
Supergirl
Continuing the trend at Warner Bros. to bend its DC Cinematic Universe away from the dark and dour tone set by Zack Snyder toward a lighter and more optimistic superhero world as reflected in Wonder Woman and, presumably, in the upcoming Shazam!, Deadline has confirmed that new head Walter Hamada wants to develop a Supergirl movie and has already hired Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox) to pen the script. It’s still early going and the movie does not yet have a producer, but a youthful, female-centric new franchise would go a long way toward broadening the appeal of the DCCU for the average moviegoer and could be the studio’s answer to Marvel-Sony’s Spider-Man franchise.
Joker
We still don’t know if those crazy rumors about Batman’s dad, Thomas Wayne, being written “in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump,” in Todd Phillips‘ Joker are true or not, but Marc Maron‘s character has finally been revealed. According to That Hashtag Show, Maron will play the longtime producer of the talk show host played by Robert De Niro.
Wonder Woman
Just because she gave her life defending Diana (Gal Gadot) from German invaders, that doesn’t mean we have seen the last of Antiope (Robin Wright). According to Net-A-Porter, the Amazon’s greatest warrior and Diana’s aunt will return in flashback in Patty Jenkins‘ sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Glad to see WB isn’t giving up on its DC movieverse. A few missteps, sure, but lots of good stuff have come out of Man of Steel, BvS and even Justice League. I had very few issues with Man of Steel — I have been waiting to see super-speed come into play in a superhero fight forever — more from BvS and JL, but lots of good stuff in there. I am personally not interested in a Supergirl movie, but if it keeps the movieverse alive I am all for it!
Aquaman…? I don’t know. Still have a sour taste in my mouth about “water” movies going back to Waterworld with Kevin Costner. Momoa is great, but not my idea of what Aquaman is like. Course I will go to see it!
Joker just looks weird, but Joaquin is a mad genius and if anyone can make this movie work he can.

Do we “need” a Supergirl movie? There’s already the TV show. Why not make that Gotham Sirens or Birds of Prey movie they have been talking about? Or what about Batgril? Just because Whedon’s gone, it shouldn’t get shelved.
I kind of agree with you, Jeremy. Make a new property instead of rehashing something that is already established. I can see putting a new Flash in Justice League, but why make a solo movie about him when you can watch his adventures on TV for free?
