Taiki Waititi Would Like to Make a Black Widow Comedy

When it was first announced that Taika Waititi would be helming Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel, a lot of people were left scratching their heads at the thought of how the New Zealand director’s eccentric brand of humor would translate in the world of the thunder god. The answer, of course, is that Waititi’s humor was exactly what critics and moviegoers wanted to see in the next adventure of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), as Thor: Ragnarok is one the best-reviewed Marvel movies, second only to the original Iron Man.

Waititi is currently not slated to direct another Marvel movie, but we could easily see him lending his brand of humor to a Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man sequel to great effect. However, when asked which Marvel character he would most like to direct next, his answer was surprising, to say the least:

In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So I’d love to see Black Widow … as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?

As much as we enjoy Waititi’s humor, Black Widow does not seem to be one of those characters that lends itself to a comedic or absurdist slant. We would rather see her get the Atomic Blonde treatment. Just the thought of a comedic take on Black Widow immediately brought to mind this ridiculous rom-com trailer for a Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson from SNL:

Jesus, that SNL skit was godawful. After having seen Thor twice now, I can’t see how Taikia’s style would fit BW. How about more of that rock dude, please.
