Joss Whedon Wants an Unknown Actress for Batgirl Role
Joss Whedon may still be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a major way, as evidenced by his recent appearance at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 world premiere, but he’s preparing to step across to the other side of the superhero movie spectrum as the writer, director and producer of a live-action Batgirl movie for Marvel competitors Warner Bros. & DC Entertainment.
It’s a rare thing to see a creator talking about a DC movie from the red carpet of a Marvel premiere, but that’s exactly what Whedon did when he told Variety that he’s “very excited to see a girl in the cowl,” referring to the classic Batman-style mask worn by Batgirl. When asked about casting Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Whedon said that he still needs to give voice to the character, but added that he will likely cast an unknown actress.
I doubt it will be a name. I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her.

The movie will be the first Batgirl-inspired movie since the character’s creation in the 1960s and only the second female-led superhero movie in the DCEU after this year’s Wonder Woman opens on June 2nd.
