Donald Glover Teases a Never-Before-Seen Star Wars Shot in Han Solo Movie

There’s been all sorts of rumors and speculation about how much of the footage shot by original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller was reshot by fill-in director Ron Howard after the pair was dismissed from their duties on Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Originally, it was said that Howard was basically just batting clean-up, doing reshoots to adjust story elements or the tone of the movie. However, Paul Bettany, who joined the production late as an “intergalactic gangster,” recently told Total Film that Howard performed more extensive reshoots than was initially planned, as well as tons of new footage.

Bettany’s comments have caused many fans to become concerned that the movie will be a Frankenstein monster of cobbled together scenes and tones not unlike Justice League, which had trouble reconciling the styles of original director Zack Snyder and second director Joss Whedon. However, considering Bettany was added to the film only after Michael K. Williams was unable to return for rehoots, it’s possible that his experience is different than that of the main cast. For at least one of the leading cast members, that appears to be true. In an interview with /Film, Donald Glover, who co-stars alongside Alden Ehrenreich‘s young Han Solo as a young Lando Calrissian, there were “not a ton” of reshoots.

Not a lot at all, at least not for me. I think we’ve all never been faced with anything like that and I think he did a good job of coming and tell us he didn’t want to change what we were doing at all. He wanted us to remain confident in our vision. He just wanted to sculpt it in a way.

It’s speculated that Han will win the Millenium Falcon away from Lando in the movie, and that he will likely make the famous Kessel Run, but we really don’t know much of anything about what the plot of the movie will be and Glover would not give up any details. However, he did reveal that we will get a never-before-seen shot of the Millenium Falcon.

I remember going on set one of the first times, [Howard] was like, ‘Yeah, I want to follow you onto the Millennium Falcon and do this thing.’ I was like, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen the outside go into the inside.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, no one’s ever done that shot.’ As a fan I was like yeah, I was really excited. I know there’s been a lot of talk in the press about this movie but for me anyway, it was a dream and also it looks really cool to me.

Considering Bettany called Han Solo a “gangster movie,” a long take of Lando boarding the Falcon and walking through its halls a la Martin Scorsese‘s classic restaurant take in Goodfellas would really fit the bill, especially if Lando is rocking that sweet cape he wore in Empire.

Lawrence and Jon Kasdan wrote the script for Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke and Pheobe Waller-Bridge also star, with Joona Suotamo as Chewbacca.

The movie opens in theaters on May 25th.
